9/11 Remembered
Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 9:16 AMWritten by Sharona BNine years ago the world somehow seemed a safer, simpler place but when two planes crashed into the World Trade Centre complex on 11 September 2001 that innocence was abruptly shattered.
People around the world caught the images beamed live on TV screens; they stopped whatever they were doing and looked on in disbelief as a real-life horror movie played on in front of their eyes. They couldn't watch yet they couldn't look away. As with the day that Kennedy was assassinated or that Elvis died, 9/11 became this generation's day that would never be forgotten.
2,752 innocent civilians and firefighters died in the Al-Qaeda attack and a stunned world looked on, mortified at the senseless loss of life and the mass destruction caused by the suicide pilots.
The site is currently being reconstructed with new buildings, including a 102 story tower that will be named the 'One World Trade Centre' and which will become the tallest building in the United States. The site will also include a memorial and museum.
